Fire Resistant Properties Of Lexan Polycarbonate

A question we are occasionally asked "is the Caravan Safe fire proof". The answer we give is "the Caravan Safe was designed for high security anti-theft safe and not as a fire proof safe but one of the many benefits of Lexan Polycarbonate is, it is more fire resistant than most metal safes". This is explained in detail below.

Caravan Safe Heat Resistant Test

The Caravan Safe range of High Security Safes (also known as the Hide Away Safe) are manufactured with the manufacturers own special formulae of Lexan Polycarbonate, a General Electric Trademarked Impact Modified Polycarbonate. While this particular polycarbonate is extremely heat insulative it is not officially classified as fire proof.

There are no fire standards written for a Lexan Polycarbonate High Security Safe because the Hide Away Safe Co, the manufacturer of the Caravan Safe, is the only manufacturer in the World to make a High Security Safe from Lexan Polycarbonate, consequently there has been no specific fire rating given to the Caravan Safe.

NB: Nothing is exactly fire proof unless it is

concrete lined, the Caravan Safe is termed

"fire resistant" and is very "heat insulative".

In fact more insulative than metal safes.

Monitored Heat Test

A question we are asked occasionally: "Is the Caravan Safe fire proof".

To answer that question in 1995 we conducted a monitored heat test on a Metal Safe and the Caravan Safe. We wanted to compare the condition of an identical piece of paper in each safe after being placed inside a kiln for 15 minutes at 400c.

This Is What We Did

A piece of paper was torn in half and one half was placed inside a Metal Safe and the other half was placed inside a Caravan Safe. Then both safes were placed in a kiln that had been pre-heated to 400c and left in the kiln for 15 minutes.

The End Result Being

After 15 minutes both safes were taken out of the kiln. The internal temperature of the Metal Safe reached 250c and the piece of paper inside was starting to char (paper will start to ignite around 250c) compared with the Caravan Safe internal temperature was only 150c and the piece of paper inside was unaffected. The result showed:

Physical condition of safes:

Bullet Metal Safe, relatively unaffected by the heat.
Bullet Caravan Safe, a little sad looking - it needed replacing.

Physical condition of the piece of paper inside both safes:

Bullet Paper inside the Metal Safe was basically destroyed by the heat.
Bullet Paper inside the Caravan Safe was unaffected.

The protection of the contents inside a Safe

is the most crucial factor of safe ownership.

The price to replace the Caravan Safe is a small investment after the trauma of a fire.

WARNING from the editor. People tend to die in house fires when they spend time removing valuables and keepsakes thinking the fire is not all that serious. It is the smoke that generally kills not the flames.

Following Is An Exert From Our Information Pack

It is important to note that Lexan Polycarbonate is a fire resistant material but it is not fire-proof. The Caravan Safe was designed as an anti-theft device. The selection of the material was primarily with consideration for impact resistance and overall strength. The fire-resistant aspect of Lexan Polycarbonate is a bonus to purchaser but not the primary consideration in terms of design or application.

Please Note: Losses of personal property (which can be stored within the Caravan Safe) in Australia regarding theft versus fire is in the order of 820 occasions to one. That means there is 1 fire claim (that could be just a minor kitchen stove fire) to every 820 claims of theft. As you can see fire IS NOT really a major concern.

NB: All other countries have a similar insurance claim ratios.
